Governance Code for Sports Ireland – Adoption Journey Statement

ALSAA wishes to state that from 3rd December 2025, its Council reiterated its commitment to the process as set out for its organisation and is now on the Adoption Journey to become compliant as a Type C sports organisation, under Sport Ireland’s Governance Code for Sport. This refers to a larger, more complex sports body with dedicated staff, where the Council focuses strictly on governance (oversight, strategy, finance), delegating day-to-day management to a General Manager and management team, requiring formal structures like audit committees and clear policies for legal compliance (e.g. data protection, child welfare).

Key Characteristics of a Type C Organization:

  • Separation of Governance & Management: A clear distinction exists, with the board governing and staff managing operations.
  • Professional Staff: Employs a significant number of staff, organised into departments.
  • Formal Governance Structures: Often requires committees, such as an audit committee with members experienced in finance, as outlined in their terms of reference.
  • Legal Compliance Focus: Must adhere to various laws (e.g., data protection, child protection) and have formal policies in place.
  • Compliance & Reporting: Completes compliance records for the Governance Code, detailing how they meet standards, but generally doesn’t file them unless requested by Sport Ireland.
